"display hidden folders" in XP.
I've tried several times to check "display hidden folders" under the "tools" tab, by selecting "folder options". However, each time I reopen that menu, I find the feature has been deselected. I've also tried rebooting after making the change, but to no avail.Solutions very welcome and appreciated:)1 person needs an answerI do too

Most often caused by malware infection so do some thorough scanning. Post back with the results if you need further help.http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_MalwareMS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I would recommend you to do these:1. Reboot the computer in Safe Mode with Networking. If you have a Wireless Internet Connection Type, have a hardwire internet connection. To reboot in Safe Mode with networking: a. Press the restart button. b. The moment you press the restart button, keep on tapping F8 until the Advanced Boot Options appear. C. Select Safe Mode with Networking2. Open Internet Explorer browser and go to http://safety.live.com.3. Run a Full Service Scan of the OneCare Safety Scanner.4. Take note of the items that are detected but cannot be removed, if any. Get back to me with the names of infections that cannot be removed, if any.5. After removing the infections (if any), boot back in the Normal Mode by simply restarting the computer the normal way you do it.6. Check on Tools, Folder Options, and see if the Show Hidden Files and Folders is behaving accordingly. Otherwise, please get back to me.

Thank you very much Jaycee for your learned response. I was since able to remedy my problem by finding a set of instructions elsewhere on the site; I believe that the answer was in a link to a differnt site from where I was able to download something that did the trick. However, I think that I do indeed suffer from some registry tampering and so I intend to follow your instructions above. I will report back on those results! In the meantime, could you explain why I did not get an alert to your reply, even though I checked that option. I was expecting an email to notify me to return to the site, which, by the way, I remained signed onto (as proven by the fact that now I did not have to sign back on, even though my computer was turned off). Thanks again,EditorMA

Hi EditorMA,Here's how to hardwire:1. Unplug the cable from your router.2. Connect that cable at the back of the tower of your computer.3. Restart your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. That's it. Let me know if this helps.

Hi EditorMATry the following : I did it and it works.1- Scan your full PC with Avira anti virus.( It's a freeware program for personal use). 2-Reboot your system. 3-Navigate with Start>run>regedit>HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer>Advanced.4-Locate hidden in the right panel and change it's value to 1. 5-Don't use again the command : Tools>Folder Options>View>& Check or Uncheck view hidden files.6-Only click refresh (One time only) in any window containing hidden files. All files will be shown. This setting will remain as long as you respect No.5 above.Good Luck

Restart your computer in Safe Mode with Networking. That's it. Let me know if this helps.Hello again, Jaycee,In following your last 2 set of instructions, there were 2 problems I encountered:1. Hardwiring: Once I disconnect the cable from the router and plug it into the only available matching socket in my laptop, I lose my internet connection. At that point, needless to say, I can't access the safety.live.com site you refer me to.2. After restoring my internet connection and rebooting normally, I looked for the Safety Scanner you mentioned in your first set of instructions, but discovered that it has been discontinued.I want to also note that I do have Avira which is always in active mode and I use it every week to run a full scan.Thank you for your patience:)EditorMA

Hi EditorMA If you do have Avira anti virus then try my suggested answer posted 4 hours ago. It won't take long time since your PC is scanned.
